A Finch Died =(

This is the 2nd female Goldenfinch (the males are bright yellow) that has flown into our kitchen window and died! It is a very sad thing. I keep thinking of that Windex commercial about the crows laughing when the guy runs into the sliding glass door - but he is only surprised - not dead! I waited and watched this Finch to see if its chest was moving - hoping it was only stunned - but not so. It's such a pretty bird and they are plentiful around our yard, but I don't want them to keep dying =( It's the Washington State Bird.

It usually has to do with the time of year and the angle of the sun. It causes the window to look like a mirrored reflection of the yard outside so the birds think they can fly through.

To help protect them at this time of year you can hang streamers, or junk CD's on string (dental flos works well) so it tirls in the breeze and it will help detract them from that flight path.

Another option is to set up a lamp shining out the window which will overpower the effect of the sun, but that burns unnecessary electricity.

If you are artitically inclined you can use simple tempra paints and decorate the 'outside' of the window. They can be gently scrubbed off later with soap and water, or simply shaved off with a scraper blade (the razor blade in holder kind - but easiest sort to use is the kind sold in aquarium shops for scraping algae off the sides of glass tanks).

So sorry you've had to watch these beauties suffer this way.

I mark the calendar with the start date for "crash season" in our area and we drag the big houseplants outside to set in front of the doorwalls for the duration. It only lasts about 3 weeks each, spring and autumn.

Be creative - all you want to do is prevent the reflection in the glass - drape an old sheet that the kids (or you) painted, or whatever - just something that doesn't fool them into thinking the window is just another pass through the shrubs and trees.

I had this happen to me when I lived in a corner apt. Doves would fly into the window. I got red tape for the windows and initiated a big X on the window. This stopped the incidents. However check out this link:
